In the last federal election, more than a third of Canadians eligible to vote didn't. It was the worst voter turnout in Canada's history. HSA urges members to help reverse this trend. Your vote does make a difference - and the Members of Parliament you elect can have a huge impact on the health care and community social services that HSA members provide.

Three days of advance voting will be held throughout BC, to help ensure voters can get to the polls:

Biomedical Engineering Technologists who maintain specialized hospital equipment at acute care hospitals across the province will continue to be represented by HSA, according to a review panel of the Labour Relations Board.

As you know, all workers have a right to a safe work environment. Surveys consistently indicate that HSA members care about and are willing to become involved in health and safety issues. Unions have a significant role to play ensuring that our workplaces are safe. HSA takes a leadership role in the promotion of workplace safety through health and safety education initiatives for our membership, such as the Prevention of Workplace Violence Workshop. We urge you to talk to other Stewards, OH&S Stewards and interested members to encourage them to attend this workshop together.

The 2006 HSA Convention is just around the corner. Once again, delegates will have an opportunity to debate issues and help to determine the future direction of our union.

All HSA members are welcome to attend and speak at the Convention, which will be held this year at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown in Burnaby. However, only delegates have the right to vote.

HSA members will soon be preparing for the 2006 HSA Convention, to be held April 6, 7, & 8, 2006 at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown in Burnaby.

Conventions are where chapters from around the province determine the future direction of the union. Policies, actions, constitutional amendments, structural changes are all discussed and debated at convention.

This year Regional Director elections will take place in Regions 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10. All HSA members in these regions are encouraged to put their name forward for these important positions.

Directors meet, on average, every six weeks and take an active leadership role in representing the union. They are reimbursed for the time they spend in official meetings at their own regular rate of pay. Part-time and casual members are reimbursed as if they were at work during the meetings they attend.
