HSA members re-elect Val Avery as Region 2 Director

HSA members in Region 2 have elected Val Avery to a third term as their representative on the unions Board of Directors.  Val is a physiotherapist at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. 
The other candidate for election was Derrick Hoyt, a pathologists assistant at Royal Jubilee Hospital.

During the past four years, Val has served on HSAs Run for the Cure Committee and Bargaining Committee, and as a Long Term Disability Trustee.  Val has also been elected by the HSA board to serve 3 consecutive terms as HSAs Vice-President. 

Bargaining for health science professionals set to resume next week

In a short bargaining session at the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association bargaining table this week, the union bargaining association tabled anti-bullying language to address issues in the workplace.

-The unions presented language that helps improve personal safety for health science professionals at work," said HSPBA chief negotiator Jeanne Meyers.

-The pace at the bargaining table has been very slow. There has been only a limited exchange of specific language on the substantive issues," Meyers said.

While health authorities continue to eliminate services, film highlights value of music therapy

On the heels of yet another reorganization that means the loss of music therapy services for BC patients, the Music Therapy Association of BC will highlight the value of music therapy with the screening of the documentary, The Gift of Music: Stories of Music Therapy this week at the Vancity Theatre in Vancouver.

This month, through a reorganization of therapeutic services, Lions Gate Hospitals Evergreen House music therapy program was eliminated.

Incorrect information about tax deduction for LTD premiums paid

A recent article in The Report contained incomplete information about tax deductions.
The potential for deducting for LTD premiums only applies if you are on an accepted LTD claim.
 
A member who is on an accepted LTD claim may be able to claim on their tax returns for LTD premiums they have previously paid. Whether they are eligible to do so, and how far back they can claim, is something HSA recommends you discuss with a financial or tax professional.

Members confirm shared benefit costs a non-starter

HSA members have reconfirmed that concessions on extended and dental benefits are not negotiable.

After learning that government appears to be set to propose to save money by getting health care workers to pay for some of their health and dental benefits, HSA conducted an informal telephone survey of members on the weekend to alert members to this pending proposal, and to get preliminary feedback from members.

Pharmacists' wage rollback rescinded

Talks at the Health Science Professionals bargaining table today opened with an announcement from the Health Employers Association of BC that the plan to roll back the temporary market adjustment for pharmacists has been rescinded.

HSA President Reid Johnson applauded the efforts of hospital pharmacists across the province who spoke out against the 9 to 14 per cent wage rollback planned for April 1, 2012 announced January 6.

Bargaining gets underway for new health science professionals contract

Bargaining for a new collective agreement for BCs 17,000 health science professionals got underway today in Vancouver. HSA is the lead union in the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association. (HSPBA)

-Health science professionals are looking for fairness and respect: fair, respectful, and meaningful collective bargaining; and fair recognition of the role health science professionals play in the modern health care system," said HSA President Reid Johnson said in opening the talks with Health Employers Association of BC.

Labour adjustment plan reached in Interior Health lab reorganization

HSA and Interior Health Authority (IHA) have arrived at a Labour Adjustment Plan that reduces the negative impact on members caused by the IHAs wholesale restructuring of lab services.

Under the restructured system, 52 members will be affected. There are 58 positions available for those members.

Health science professionals open contract negotiations February 27

Health science professionals are scheduled to begin negotiations for a new collective agreement next week.

HSA President Reid Johnson said health science professionals will be looking for strong indications early on that government and its bargaining agent, Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC), are prepared to address fundamental issues.
