NUPGE 2021 Scholarship Opportunities For HSA Members

CHANGE OF APPLICATION DATE: NUPGE HAS EXTENDED THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS TO FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2021. 

Every year, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) awards national scholarships of $2,500 each. HSA is an affiliate of NUPGE. HSA members and their families may be eligible to apply for the NUPGE scholarships. 

To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must meet the criteria set out by NUPGE which may include the need to be a member or the child/foster child or grandchild/foster grandchild of a member or retiree. Scholarships may have additional requirements. Please review the specific criteria on the NUPGE website. 

NUPGE has announced a new National Union scholarship, the Scholarship for Black Students. It will come with an award of $2,500 that is similar to their other scholarships. The essay question will be: Describe the contributions of 2 trailblazers of African descent (past or contemporary) and how it has benefited you as a person. 

The scholarships reflect the union's pursuit of equal opportunities for all workers. An essay submission is required for entry, and winners will be selected based on the quality of the essay submitted.  

There are 8 annual scholarships as follows:

  • Brian Fudge Memorial Scholarship
  • Scholarship for Black Students
  • Scholarship for Indigenous Students
  • Scholarship for LGBTQI2S Students
  • Scholarship for Students of Colour
  • Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship
  • Tommy Douglas Scholarship
  • Young Worker Scholarship - 2 to be awarded
