Wild fires anticipated: Registration now open for health science professionals to register for the Emergency Health Provider Registry

As British Columbia heads into another summer of wild fires, Health Emergency Management BC has activated the provincial Emergency Health Provider Registry to assist in the coordination of relief staffing for health care providers. Any Health Authority is able to access the registry when local emergencies create additional staffing needs.

HSA applauds government announcement on new training spaces for OT and PT

The BC government is increasing the number of training seats for occupational therapy and physiotherapy, with new seats coming to Prince George, Vancouver and Fraser Valley. HSA applauds this announcement. These new training spaces are an important step forward to addressing the growing skills shortage in these professions. HSA has been advocating for increased training opportunities in these and other health science professions to ensure our health care system can deliver robust, team-based, and timely care to all British Columbians.

HSA marks National Nursing Week with launch of new professional development fund for HSA’s registered psychiatric nurses Health Sciences Association of BC announced today the establishment of a $115,000 Professional Development Fund available to all registered psychiatric nurses who are members of HSA. “Registered psychiatric nurses are critical members of the health care team. HSA recognizes the importance of continuing education for health care professionals who deliver important care in a specialized field of nursing,” said HSA President Val Avery.

BC Government introduces long awaited reforms to Employment Standards and Labour Code

This week the Minister of Labour, Harry Bains, introduced two pieces of legislation that together dramatically increase protections for workers and their right to join a union.   These are long overdue reforms, and it is welcome news to see the government take these first steps to restoring balance and fairness for working people.  These reforms do not cover everything - this is only the start - and HSA will continue to advocate for more changes going forward.   Employment Standards Act
