Victoria Labour Council Labour Education Weekend May 6 and 7

The Victoria Labour Council is offering four labour education workshops the weekend of May 6 and 7 at Camosun College, Inter-Urban Campus, 4461 Interurban Road, Victoria. Deadline for registration is April 20.

Registration at 8:30 a.m.
Saturday, May 6: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (lunch provided)
Sunday, May 7: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Course descriptions:
STEWARD 1
This is an introductory course dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities of a steward as an organizer, educator, leader and communicator, as well as the basic preparation and handling of a grievance.

STEWARD TRAINING 3 - STEWARD AS LEADER
This course explores the role of the steward or similar union official and the increasing responsibilities that this role entails in the face of changing union and growing legislative responsibilities. The course focuses on human rights issues; legislation; other legal obligations (duty of fair representation and duty to accommodate); and how stewards can help to build their local unions. Participants shoudl already be well grounded in basic stewards' training.

PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE
This course deals with the rules and procedures governing the preparation and conduct of local union meetins. You will discuss the rules of order, how to make a motion, the duties and responsibilities of the chairperson, and practice your skills be writing motions and participating in a mock meeting. This is an excellent course for new activists who want to learn basic parliamentary procedure and begin to practice their speaking skills on motions.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
A course for trade unionists new to the bargaining process, it will acquaint students with their repsonsibilities and the functioning of bargaining committees. The legislative framework, bargaining preparation, techniques and communication needs will all be discussed. The primary context will be negotiation pursuant to B.C. legislation.
