Steelworkers picketing at Fraser Health Authority health facilities

Labour Relations Board rules USW pickets cant block workers or patients

Members of United Steel Workers (Local 2009) are fighting for a fair collective agreement with Compass Canada. The members are amongst the lowest paid workers in the health sector, and are fighting for equality with other workers doing the same work.

In September, the Labour Relations Board ruled that Compass workers could, if necessary, put up limited pickets at facilities in the Fraser Health Authority.

In addition to strict limits to picketing locations, other restrictions in the ruling include:
• No picketing allowed closer than six feet from entrances
• Employees (including contractors and suppliers) as well as visitors and patients are allowed to enter and exit through all facility entrances

Picketing began this week at Royal Columbian on Tuesday, and Langley Memorial Hospital on Wednesday.

Today ... Thursday, October 8 ... pickets are up at Ridge Meadows Hospital.

Tomorrow ... Friday, October 9 ... picketing will occur at Burnaby General Hospital.

The list of facilities covered by the LRB order for restricted picketing are:

• Burnaby Hospital
• Chilliwack Hospital
• Eagle Ridge Hospital
• Langley Memorial Hospital
• Mission Memorial Hospital
• Peace Arch Hospital
• Queen's Park Care Centre
• Ridge Meadows Hospital
• Royal Columbian Hospital
• Surrey Memorial Hospital

No picketing will occur over the weekend. Check bulletin boards or HSAs website at www.hsabc.org for updates on any future picketing dates and locations.

Compass is not negotiating with the union at this time, and USW workers need the support of colleagues to achieve a fair contract from Compass Canada. Last month, to show their support, HSA members all across the Fraser Health Authority participated in -brown bag" days -- refraining from purchasing products from Compass food suppliers.

Please continue to support these workers in their fight for a fair wage and benefit package.
