Labour Day rally to support locked-out and striking workers

Labour Day is not just another holiday, and HSA is encouraging all members to remember the struggles of working people before us that have helped achieve things like the 40-hour work week, minimum wage, and protection from occupational hazards this weekend.

In the Lower Mainland, the BC Federation of Labour is holding a Labour Day rally in support of locked-out Telus and CBC and striking Teck-Cominco workers, to be held Monday, Sept. 5 at 12 noon across from the Telus Building at the corner of Kingsway and Boundary in Burnaby.

The rally will feature speakers from the three unions as well as Canadian Labour Congress President Ken Georgetti and B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair.

Members of the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) have been locked out by Telus since July 21, and have been without a contract for five years. Contracting out of jobs is a key issue.

Members of the Canadian Media Guild (CMG) were locked out by CBC August 15, and contracting out is also a demand of the employer.

Members of the United Steelworkers have been on strike against Teck-Cominco in Trail since July 19. Retirement issues are the sticking point in that dispute.

Make a statement this Labour Day. Please support workers fighting for fair collective agreements.
