HSA Social justice day workshop

This Social Justice workshop will focus on two areas – Disability Rights and Transgender Rights.
Part one: Workers With Disability and Ability
This course is designed to explore myths, mistaken beliefs and assumptions regarding people with disabilities. It will raise awareness of barriers that people who are differently abled experience in the workplace. Participants will develop action plans designed to help break down these barriers. Rights and responsibilities for “Duty to Accommodate” will be briefly explored with a few examples of accommodations identified. Participants will gain tools on how to help change attitudes towards those who are differently abled and how to increase workplace accessibility. After this course, participants will have an increased understanding of the stereotypes surrounding people with disabilities, have learned how they can help improve accessibility and working conditions for people who are differently abled and have an appreciation for the Duty to Accommodate and Human Rights Legislation.

Sheryl Burns is a long time women’s, labour and disability rights activist and is currently the President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1936, Community Social Services-Greater Vancouver and Regional Vice-President of CUPE BC.
Sheryl is co-chair of the CUPE BC Community Social Services Committee, the Persons with Disabilities representative on the CUPE National Women’s Committee, the Workers with Disabilities representative on the BC Federation of Labour Executive Council and proud board member of the Disability Alliance British Columbia. Sheryl recently represented CUPE National at the International Labour Organization Experts meeting of Persons with Disabilities and Decent Work in Geneva, Switzerland.
Sheryl is co-author of the publication Mothers with Disabilities and the BC Child Protection System: Final Report for the Ad Hoc Committee for Research Regarding Mothers with Disabilities and the BC Child Protection System and author of Mothers Without Legal Status in Canada- A Research Project.
Sheryl is passionate about social justice and labour activism and in her spare time can be found in the mountains or the forest where she loves to hike.
Part Two: My name was January
Workshop participants will view the film, My name was January. Synopsis: When a trans sister, January Marie Lapuz, is brutally murdered in her own home in New Westminster, BC, a community reacts and her friends and other trans women of colour come to share and voice their issues, concerns, and challenges. January was seen as a bright light in the lives of many. This is the story of January, a friend, a daughter, a person. This film will not only bring justice to January, but to all the women who have lost their lives. January had a beautiful soul, and now part of her soul rests in each and every one of us. Workshop participants will engage in an interactive discussions about inclusivity, exploring intersectionality, and oppression survival in the sex trade.

Alex is the Founder of Sher Vancouver. He is active in the community and cultural affairs and is an advocate for marginalized and vulnerable people. Alex has worked as a social worker, instructor, clinician, youth counsellor, and team leader. He has an MSc in Public Administration and Public Policy from the Department of Government from the London School of Economics and a Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University. Alex is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.
Participants will receive wage replacement, accommodations (shared) and travel expenses in accordance with HSA policy.
