Frequently asked questions about the new Health Science Professionals collective agreement

With the Health Science Professionals Collective Agreement now ratified, members can expect to see the provisions of the collective agreement to begin to take effect immediately. The following frequently asked questions are being distributed to members in response to numerous enquiries about key issues contained in the agreement.

Privatization key theme at HSA's 35th convention

HSAs 35th Annual Convention kicked off Friday with an announcement by HSA President Cindy Stewart that she will not be seeking re-election when her current term expires in April 2007.

Stewart noted the union has received a strong vote of confidence from the membership and is well-positioned to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

One of the challenges Stewart identified is the growing threat of health care privatization, and she challenged delegates to take a key role in protecting public health care for the future.

Health science professionals bargaining association name change

An application by HSA to change the name of the bargaining association covering health science professionals has been approved by the Labour Relations Board.

Effective immediately, the bargaining association will be known as the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association — a name that better reflects the work of the professionals covered by the contract. It was previously known as the Paramedical Professional Bargaining Association.

Bruce MacDonald to represent Region 3 members

HSA members in Region 3 have elected Bruce MacDonald, a social worker at Royal Columbian Hospital, as their representative on the union's Board of Directors.

The other candidates for election were Tanis Blomly, a recreation therapist at Eagle Ridge Hospital, and Susan Hearsey, a physiotherapist at Burnaby Hospital.

Details of UBA tentative agreement

A tentative agreement has been reached covering 15,000 community social services workers in B.C. The four-year deal includes wage increases totalling 8.3 percent, wage parity increases, and a pension plan at the end of the agreement. An additional 1.6 percent will go into workers pockets annually after the first year, when employers resume Medical Services Plan contributions. Full-time workers will receive a $4,200 signing bonus (pro-rated for part-timers and casuals.)

Details of Nurses Bargaining Association tentative agreement

The Nurses' Bargaining Association has reached a tentative agreement with the Health Employers' Association on a new contract that provides significant gains for nurses in key areas of workload and compensation.

The NBA is recommending acceptance of the agreement and will be taking it out to the members for ratification.
