Supervisors in the Union

HSA is offering three one-day workshops this Fall:

Thursday, June 5 (Kelowna ... Coast Capri Hotel)
Tuesday, June 10 (Prince George ... Coast Inn of the North)
Thursday, June 12 (Vancouver ... HSA Office)

HSA members who work in a supervisory role will have the opportunity to attend a one-day workshop in either Kelowna, Prince George, or in Vancouver at the HSA office.

Rally for Medicare, increased political action supported by HSA delegates

Delegates rallied to Stand Up for Medicare.

Delegates to the 37th annual convention of the Health Sciences Association kicked off the two-day convention with a rally to support Medicare, and closed the annual meeting bidding farewell to two long-standing board members.

The Friday rally, -Standing up for Medicare" featured warnings about what the future hold for health care in B.C.

Public health care forum draws standing-room only crowd

Just hours after Health Minister George Abbott tabled controversial amendments to the Medicare Protection Act on April 8, more than 200 people attended a public talk by physicians and international policy experts about the dangers of continued health care privatization in B.C.

Dr. Michael Klein ... physician, researcher and founding member of the Canadian Doctors for Medicare ... reasserted that health care funding has remained stable as a percentage of both the B.C. and Canadian economies over the past decades.

NUPGE continues campaign to save public medicare system

Ottawa (3 Apr. 2008) - The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has issued two new public education tools as part of its ongoing campaign to defend and expand Canada's public medicare system.

Workshop Reminder

There is still room available in the three-day Steward Training workshop on April 28 ... 30, 2008.  Please register as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this workshop.

Eligible stewards should print a pre-registration form off the HSA website at (go to Member Services, then Education) and return it to the HSA Office (Attention:  Karin Herbert) as soon as possible.  HSA will call you to confirm your registration.

Valerie Avery new Region 2 Director

HSA members in Region 2 have elected Valerie Avery, a physiotherapist at Royal Jubilee Hospital, as their representative on the union's Board of Directors.

The other candidates for election were Derrick Hoyt, a pathologists assistant at Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Anna Morton, a social worker at Queen Alexandra Centre for Childrens Health.

Heather Sapergia new Region 10 Director

HSA members in Region 10 have elected Heather Sapergia, a medical laboratory technologist at Prince George Regional Hospital, as their representative on the union's Board of Directors.

The other candidate for election was Mandi Ayers, a medical laboratory technologist at Bulkley Valley District Hospital.
