Working people make gains in July

OTTAWA ... The latest employment numbers from Statistics Canadas Labour Force Survey show that July was a relatively good month for workers.

Finally, theres a bit of good news for working people across the country. More people looking for work were able to find full-time jobs. Employment for young Canadians continued to be strong. Wages were on the rise. And the beleaguered manufacturing sector saw a gain in jobs after months of devastating losses, particularly in central Canada.

Canadians deserve more paid vacation time

A new report released today by the Canadian Labour Congress confirms what most working people in this country have long suspected. Canadians give more of their waking hours to their employers than workers in most OECD countries.

While less discussed than wage and income inequality, there are huge differences among working people in terms of access to paid time off the job within Canada ... mostly depending on their province of residence. Ken Georgetti, the president of the Canadian Labour Congress, says it's time for a change.

HSA members elect Kimball Finigan as Region 5 Director

HSA members in Region 5 have elected Kimball Finigan, a radiation therapist at the Vancouver Centre of the BC Cancer Agency as their representative on the HSA board of directors. Finigan defeated Gerald Yu, a health records administrator at Childrens and Womens Health Centre of BC.

Stewards play a vital role in the union.  Particularly important is the stewards role in contract interpretation, organizing and the grievance procedure.  In recognition of the need for educating new stewards in these areas, HSA is offering a 3-day Steward Training ... Level 1 workshop at the HSA office this fall:

National Day of Action for for First Nations

Join the National Day of Action June 29, 2007 in a march and rally.

March: 11 a.m. - Vanier Park to Library Square (begin assembling at 9:30 a.m. at the Coast Guard station by the Burrard Street Bridge.)

Rally: 12 noon at Library Square (300 West Georgia)

Elders, families and drivers are encouraged to follow the march as a caravan of vehicles. Paid parking is available in and around Libary Square.
