In the last year, there has been an increase in awareness around equity issues around the world. The Black Lives Matter movement, Dr. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s investigation and report on systemic racism in health care, and the uncovering of unmarked graves of Indigenous children continue to be relevant and must be addressed.
Details for the 2021 Summer Institute for Union Women in August have just been released, and HSA will support members to participate by reimbursing registration costs. Scholarships are also available for 11 members to cover registration and wage replacement for the three-day school on a first-come, first-served basis.
This past year has been remarkably challenging.
HSA members have been front and centre as we manage through a pandemic that has affected every aspect of our personal lives and work lives. Unlike for many British Columbians, going home and staying home was not an option for our members. You were called upon to show up – under new scheduling, with the use of new technologies, and at increased risk.

Are you an HSA member with a passion for disability management and rehabilitation? Do you have strong organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills? Are you employed with the Vancouver Island Health Authority? If so, consider putting in an application for an appointment as an Enhanced Disability Management Program (EDMP) regional representative.
HSA will hold its 50th anniversary annual convention June 2-4, 2021 on a virtual platform. This marks the union’s second online convention in as many years as efforts to end the COVID-19 pandemic continue worldwide.
At the annual convention, delegates representing members from throughout the province set goals, debate policies, and recommend actions for the union and its members to carry out for the year.
HSA is pleased to offer another opportunity to attend this two-day workshop virtually. Members are expected to attend the entirety of both days.
