Fall 2009 Pension Seminars for Municipal Pension Plan Members

The municipal Pension Plan continues to offer pension seminars to plan members.

Plan members have a choice of two seminars.  Your Pension, Your Future is for new and mid-career plan members. In this seminar, they'll explain pension benefits and help members understand how decisions they make today can impact their future pension income. Members will learn how to read their Member's Benefit Statement and find out how they can recover time from a break in service (such as general, maternity and parental leaves) to make the most of their future pension.

2009 Run for the Cure: Register today for Team HSA

This years annual Run for the Cure, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's most important fundraiser, is Sunday October 4.

HSA has supported the run since 1997, and is one of three regional sponsors of the Run for the Cure. At every step from diagnosis to treatment and recovery, highly trained health science professionals use their expertise to help breast cancer patients.

The union urges HSA members and others to join the HSA team to run or walk for the cure October 4.

Pride Week events: union members invited to participate with Multi-Union Pride group

Union members interested in participating in Vancouvers Pride Week events this year are encouraged to join two Multi-Union Pride events.

Saturday, Aug. 1:  Dyke March
The Vancouver Dyke March brings an all-inclusive march and festival to the East Side (Commercial Drive area).  Participants, friends, and supporters can enjoy an afternoon of visibility, pride, music, community, art and merry-making the day before the annual Pride Parade.

Members of United Food and Commercial Workers 1518 have been on strike since December, 2008 over wages and benefits.

HSA magazine takes top national award

At a national conference this weekend, the Canadian Association of Labour Media awarded its highest honour to The Report, the magazine for HSA members.

The Report won "Best Overall Publication" demonstrating the best combined use of writing, graphics, design, and editorial content and judgement.  The category includes all local, provincial, and national union publications produced by staff, including federations of labour across Canada

Workplace deaths and injuries continue to plague BC workers and families

April 28th, 2009 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Day of Mourning. Held in 100 countries around the world, it is a day to reflect on the terrible toll of workers killed and injured on the job.

Last year, 160 workers in BC were killed or died as the result of an occupational disease. Since 2002, workplace fatalities and serious injuries have continued to increase.

NUPGE calls for special prosecutors to protect workers

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is calling on the Canadian government to appoint special prosecutors to step up enforcement of laws to protect workers on the job.

In conjunction with observances marking the 25th National Day of Mourning for workers killed and injured on the job in Canada, NUPGE president James Clancy has written to Rob Nicholson, the country's justice minister and attorney general, calling for new measures to improve safety for workers.

Rally to support hospital housekeepers

HSA President Reid Johnson will join with BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair and HEU members in a rally and march to support hospital housekeepers currently in contract discussions with their employers Aramark, Sodexo and Compass.
