CESA raises awareness about June 21, National Aboriginal Day

HSAs Committee for Equality and Social Action is encouraging members to help raise awareness about National Aboriginal Day, a day first proclaimed in 1996 as an annual occasion to recognize the diverse cultures and outstanding contributions to Canada of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

This years sticker features the logo of the Sisters in Spirit project, which works to improve the human rights and address the violence facing Aboriginal women.  HSA supports this project through NUPGE and direct donations.

Community organizations mark International Day of Action for Women's Health

The Vancouver Women's Health Collective will mark May 28, the International Day of Action for Women's Health, with a "Conversation on Women's Health." Participants will discuss women's health issues, including the determinants of health such as housing and livable incomes.

The women-only event will be held at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St. Vancouver). The day begins at 9:45 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. 

CESA raises awareness about May 17, International Day Against Homophobia

HSAs Committee on Equality and Social Action is encouraging HSA members to participate in the the International Day Against Homophobia by raising awareness about the day.

Spearheaded by Fondation Émergence, the first day set aside to fight homophobia was held in Québec in 2003. The Day has expanded across Canada and then to Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom. Since then several countries have declared May 17 as the International Day Against Homophobia.

Completing Tommy's Vision:Next Steps to Expand and Improve Canada's Medicare System

More than 600 delegates gathered on May 3 and 4 in the birthplace of the nation's Medicare system -- Regina, Saskatchewan -- to unite behind Tommy Douglas' vision for public health care.

The conference S.O.S. Medicare 2: Looking Forward, brought together a stunning array of leading health care thinkers, providers, and activists in Canada, the U.S., and abroad. Delegates included academics, community activists, seniors, and students.

Labour marks Day of Mourning

HSA President Reid Johnson and Region 7 Regional Director Marg Beddis joined in the Day of Mourning for workers killed and injured on the job by laying a wreath at Bear Creek Park in Surrey Saturday. New Westminster & District Labour Council in conjunction with the Vancouver & District Labour Council, Fraser Valley Labour Council and BC Federation of Labour  hosted the event.

Health care in El Salvador ... Lessons for BC: An evening with Santiago Diaz

HSAs Committee for Equality and Social Action is hosting an evening with community organizer and activist Santiago Diaz on Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.  Diaz is the coordinator of APSIES, the Salvadoran Association for Integrated Health and Social Services, which has been a southern partner of HSA for over 15 years.
