Indigenous Awareness and Working with the UN Declaration Workshop

Event Type

An HSA Diversity Workshop

DATE: October 15, 2021
TIME: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
LOCATION: Virtual – WebEx

This workshop will offer HSA members the opportunity to increase their awareness of Indigenous Peoples and issues, work toward a path of respectful and effective indigenous relations, and how that path interacts with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (“the Declaration”).

This cross-modality workshop will include both pre-work through an online eTraining course entitled Indigenous Awareness (2 independent hours) and then a full-day of participatory online education. The AM session includes Indigenous Relations and the PM session includes Working with the UN Declaration.

In this workshop, members will:

  • review historical events and their relation to the present day,
  • become familiar with terminology and know what terms to use in different situations,
  • review perceptions, misconceptions, and realities of Indigenous Peoples,
  • explore individual and organizational strategies for developing relationships,
  • become familiar with the Declaration,
  • review the government’s reaction, policy, and implementation of the UN Declaration.

The full day session will be facilitated by Flavio Caron.  Flavio was born the son of an Anishnabe mother and Italian-Canadian father and grew up in two worlds. He is honored for what both worlds have bought him.

As an entrepreneurship and cross-cultural trainer, Flavio hopes that we all embrace the need to understand and be understood. The respect and trust that we strive to achieve in our personal and professional lives comes first and always from understanding.

HSA will cover course fees and wage replacement for the full day session in accordance with HSA Policy. Please note that no lunch per diem is provided. Please note that participants are expected to complete the 1.5 to 2 hours of pre-work before the day of the workshop on their own time. The pre-work is a requirement for attending the virtual course.
