Who we are

In health care...

Health science professionals
HSA represents more than 13,000 health science professionals, trained in over 100 different specialized health disciplines to provide diagnostic, clinical and rehabilitation services (click here for a list of health science disciplines).

These HSA members work in acute-care and long-term care hospitals, as well as in community-based child development, mental health, home support and public health agencies.

HSA is the largest union in the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association, which also includes BCGEU, CUPE, PEA, and HEU.

Health science professionals are covered by a master collective agreement negotiated with the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC).

Nurses
HSA represents more than 800 registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs) at 83 facilities in acute care, long-term care, mental health and home support.

HSA psychiatric nurses are part of the Nurses' Bargaining Association, along with the BC Nurses' Union (representing registered nurses) and the Union of Psychiatric Nurses.

Nurses are covered by a master collective agreement negotiated with the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC).

Community health services & support workers
About 650 health support workers at 20 community health care agencies (including child development, public health and mental health) are members of HSA.

Other unions in the Community Health Services and Support Bargaining Association include BCGEU and UFCW 1518.

These workers are covered by a master collective agreement negotiated with the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC).

In community social services...

HSA represents more than 750 workers (in 16 agencies) in the community social services sector, which includes transition houses, child development centres, family services agencies, mental health facilities, young offenders programs and alcohol/drug programs across BC.

These workers are covered by a master collective agreement negotiated with the Community Social Services Employers' Association (CSSEA).

In the private sector...

HSA represents more than 100 employees in the private health care sector, including:

  • diagnostic imaging clinics operated by CML Healthcare Imaging Inc. in the Victoria area and the Lower Mainland that provide services such as x-ray, mammography and ultrasound

Paragon Orthotics and CML Healthcare are covered by separate collective agreements.
